Growing up mountain bike racing, Lea and Sabra Davison noticed that there were a lack of girls on the start lines. They set out to change this by founding the Little Bellas program in 2007. Little Bellas brings together girls ages 7 to 14 and female mentors in our summer programs that uses mountain biking as a vehicle to teach the importance of teamwork, goal-setting, and participation a healthy lifestyle. Once a week during the summer or during a multi-day camp, mentors and girls ride together at a local trail network and focus on improving skills as well as participate in team-building activities. The program is organized around a curriculum that builds upon previous skill and girls are broken up into groups based on age and ability. After the group ride, the groups participate in games that incorporate that day’s skill focus. Each session always includes the all-important snack. The program started in Vermont and then went nationwide in 2010. Now, the Little Bellas program offerings include camps in California, Colorado, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, and we are based at Catamount Outdoor Family Center in Vermont. We aim to create interactions with the country's top female cyclists at every camp and provide unique mentoring experiences.
