Kate’s community service initiative takes place in a fifth grade classroom at Hemingway Elementary School in Ketchum, Idaho, the town where she lives and trains. As an “adoptee” of this particular teacher and class of students, Kate’s autographed poster hangs on the wall; she visits regularly and talks to the class about health, fitness and nutrition, among other topics. With a BA in Elementary Education, Kate adeptly incorporates into the curriculum exercises and games designed to inculcate goal-setting and team-building, and sends the students postcards from the road when she’s traveling to competitions. In a succinct summary of In the Arena’s core values, Kate writes, “I strive to be not only the best athlete but also an ideal role model.”
