Sara implemented her community service initiative in California, where she grew up, was educated and now lives and trains. She volunteered in Mammoth and Chula Vista as a literacy tutor and a youth mentor, and worked as a classroom aide in elementary schools in Mammoth and Big Bear. Now Sara and her husband, elite marathoner Ryan Hall, run the Hall Steps Foundation which takes small steps towards the marathon goal of ending poverty. Sara sums up her life’s perspective as follows: “I have found as a professional athlete that no matter what you are doing in life, it is empty when just done for yourself.”
